Student creates 'hip' purse

Like many young women, 20-year-old Brandy Goldberg loves to hang out at dance clubs. What she doesn't love is toting around a cumbersome handbag.

Two years ago, Goldberg was struck by an idea.

"I thought it would be great if I could wear one of those fannypacks, but something that was a little more sleek or sophisticated," she says.

She then went on to design and create a prototype of a 5 1/4" square purse that hangs on a chain belt worn around the hips - the Zenith Angel hip purse.

After working with engineers to develop a self-closing closure and traveling to Hong Kong to select fabrics, Goldberg's business, Bisadora, is in full-swing at a kiosk in Scottsdale Fashion Square.

Goldberg says she visits the kiosk weekly to identify trends in fabrics and see how people are reacting to her product.

"People seem to like it because it's new," she explains. "It sets them free because they don't have to carry a handbag."

While continually adding new fabrics to the Zenith Angel line, Goldberg is also working on the development of a sleek handbag that will hold more than the hip purse, yet won't be bulky.

In addition to the 8-10 hours a week she spends working on designs and research for her business, Goldberg attends Arizona State University's Barrett Honors College, where she is a third-year English major. At this time, she plans to attend graduate school after graduation, but she is also keeping her options open, depending on where her business takes her.

Goldberg adds to her already full plate by volunteering for two honor societies at ASU. Additionally, she helped plan ASU's homecoming last year.

"Whenever I have time I try to do volunteer work," she says. "I'm always open for anything because I get to meet new people."

To help her relax in her hectic life, Goldberg recently started taking guitar lessons.

Goldberg is the daughter of Mark and Sherry Goldberg of Scottsdale. She was born in Santa Monica, Calif., but her family moved to Arizona soon after she was born. She is a graduate of Chaparral High School.

Prices for the Zenith Angel hip purse and chain belt range from $20-$48. Shop Bisadora online at www.bisadora.com
