Weiner responds to Weiss

Dear Editor:
It is strange for me to say that in part I now agree with some of the views of Farley Weiss the question of the Oslo Accords. ("Double standard marks policy," Jewish News, Oct. 26) There is a double standard being adopted by the Republican administration that allows the Arabs to argue that Hamas, Islamic Jihad and Hezbollah are not terrorists but "freedom fighters."

As to Arafat and Farley Weiss' conclusion that we never should have negotiated with him I think we need to try just once more. From a public relations and a military perspective, we will not be putting Israel at any greater risk.

As to Weiss' simplistic notion that once a terrorist always a terrorist, I would offer the experience of Begin, Shamir and other Zionist proponents of anti-British terror. British military might could not stop the bombing of the King David Hotel.

I agree that there is a chance that negotiations will not work. However, the alternative is no better and is in fact worse. Should honest negotiations prove unsuccessful once more there is a very good chance that the responsibility for this will fall on Arafat and not Sharon or Peres.

Dr. Gordon M. Weiner
Professor Emeritus, ASU

Action needed

Dear Editor:
The issue of full international Red Cross membership for Israel's Magen David Adom Society is again center stage with last week's resignation of American Red Cross President Dr. Bernadine Healy. According to news reports, Dr. Healy's resignation stemmed from policy disagreements with the ARC board, including her decision to cut off dues to the International Red Cross over that body's refusal to accept the Israeli relief organization.

Send letters reaffirming support for Magen David Adom's admission to full International Red Cross membership, and the continued withholding of International Committee of the Red Cross dues to:

David McLaughlin, ARC Board Chairman, American Red Cross Headquarters, 430 17th St., N.W., Washington, D.C. 20006.

Dr. Healy should also be thanked for her dedication and perseverance on this issue of critical importance to Israel and the Jewish community. Correspondence should be sent to Dr. Healy at the address cited above.

In addition, letters or postcard should be sent to Mr. Jakob Kellenberger, President, International Committee of the Red Cross at:

International Committee of the Red Cross
Public Information Centre
19 avenue de la Paix
CH 1202 Genève, Switzerland
