Obituaries

Solomon Cukier

Solomon Cukier of Tempe died Oct. 18, 2001. He was 98. He was born in Poland and moved to Arizona in 1982 from California. He was a retired businessman. He was past president of the Phoenix Holocaust Survivors' Association and a member of Beth El Congregation.

Survivors include his wife, Blanka; son, A. David of Tempe; and three grandchildren.

Services were held at Beth El Cemetery, with Rabbi Herbert Silberman officiating. Arrangements were by Sinai Mortuary. Contributions are suggested to Tri-City Jewish Community Center Day School, 1965 E. Hermosa Drive, Tempe 85282.



Bernhardt Lander

Bernhardt "Bud" Lander of Phoenix died Oct. 18, 2001. He was 81. He was born in Chicago and moved to Arizona in 1978. He was a health care administrator and served in the United State Army in World War II. He was active in the Samaritan Corporation and the John C. Lincoln network; a member of the advisory board of Hospice of the Valley; and actively participated with the legislature in organizing Arizona's ACCHS program.

Survivors include his daughter, Francie Levinksy of Phoenix; son, Alan of Huntington, Md.; and five grandchildren.

Services were held at Beth El Cemetery, with Rabbi Albert Plotkin officiating. Arrangements were by Sinai Mortuary. Contributions are suggested to Hospice of the Valley, 1510 E. Flower St., Phoenix 85014.



Esther Friedman

Esther Friedman of Phoenix died Oct. 21, 2001. She was 85. She was born in Pittsfield, Mass., and moved to Arizona in 1998 from Florida. She was a retired registered nurse and was active in Florida chapters of Hadassah, United Jewish Appeal and Israel Bonds.

Survivors include her husband, Irving; sons, Stuart of Phoenix and Richard of North Caldwell, N.J.; sister, Lillian Wolfe of South Hadley, Mass.; six grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Services were held at Beth El Cemetery. Arrangements were by Sinai Mortuary. Contributions are suggested to Hadassah Valley of the Sun, 7000 E. Shea Blvd., #250, Scottsdale 85254.



M. Irvin Lipman

M. Irvin Lipman of Sun City West died Sept. 4, 2001. He was 83. He was born in Virginia and moved to Arizona in 1981 from Pennsylvania. He was a pharmacist and served in the U.S. Army in World War II, in the European Theatre. He was a member of Temple Beth Shalom of the Northwest Valley, J.W.B. Chautauqua Society; a former graduate and professor at Temple University; and president of Temple Beth Shalom Brotherhood.

Survivors include his wife, Shirley; daughter, Elizabeth Lenard of Boston; son, Andrew of Albuquerque, N.M.; stepdaughters, Diane Hoffman of New Jersey and Madeline Rahamim of Phoenix; stepsons, Norman Brod of Hillsboro, Calif., Michael Brod of New York and James Albert Roth; and several grandchildren.

Services were held at Temple Beth Shalom. Arrangements were by Sunland Mortuary. Contributions are suggested to Temple Beth Shalom Garden Fund, 12202 N. 101st Ave., Sun City 85351.



Ken Cooper

Ken Cooper, 46, of Scottsdale, Arizona, passed away on October 22, 2001. He was born in New York and moved to Arizona 16 years ago. Kenny was very passionate about his work. He enjoyed traveling and meeting interesting people around the world. Kenny Cooper touched the hearts and souls of all those he met. His rescue crew will dearly miss him. All of the guys will miss the poker games, but he will always be in our hearts.

He is survived by his wife, Sharon; his sons, Dustin and Max; mother, Arlene; father, Buddy and step-mom, Adrienne; sisters, Lauri and Leslie; nieces, Jessica and Hope; nephew, Matthew; and many, many loving friends.

Services were held on October 25, 2001 at Temple Chai. Memorial donations in Ken's honor may be made to Temple Chai, 4645 E. Marilyn Rd., Phoenix, AZ 85032 or the Valley of the Sun Jewish Community Center, 8010 E. Morgan Trail, Ste. 5, Scottsdale, AZ 85258. Arrangements entrusted to Messinger Pinnacle Peak Mortuary.



Geraldine Moskowitz

Geraldine Moskowitz, age 76, a resident of University Heights, Ohio, passed away October 23, 2001. She was born in Cleveland and had lived in that community for her entire life.

Survivors include her husband Philip Moskowitz of University Heights, OH, daughter Susan (Jeffrey) Nash of Pepper Pike, OH, son Les (Linda) Moskowitz of Phoenix, sister Marilyn (Philip) Urman of Pepper Pike, OH, brother Alvin (Claire) Barkley of Orange, OH, and grandchildren Michael, Adam and Lauren Moskowitz, and Mara and Jenna Nash.

Funeral services and interment were held in Cleveland on October 25th. Contributions are requested to Linda Moskowitz Youth Commission Scholarship Fund, c/o Beth El Congregation, 1118 West Glendale Avenue, Phoenix, AZ 85021.

Family will be observing local shiva from Sunday, October 28th through Tuesday, October 30th in the evening at the Moskowitz Family Residence, 5436 East Sheena Drive in Phoenix.
