Small firm produces big ideas for companies

Did you ever sit down for a Saturday evening dinner at Don & Charlie's in Scottsdale and think to yourself, "Hey! I wonder who redesigned this menu?"

Well, that would be Ben and Jane Gordon, owners of My Hero Productions, an advertising and marketing firm based in Phoenix.

Ben Gordon says the company is a full-service advertising firm that first helps companies with strategic planning and then with implementation of the strategy.

"We work with small companies, high-tech firms, as well as service and retail industries, in developing strategies for marketing that could involve any number of executions, whether it ends up being broadcast, print, billboards (or) PR," he says.

Ben Gordon, who has worked with clients from the Arizona Lottery to Cox Communications, works as the creative director of the company, while Jane Gordon brings 20 years of public relations experience to their clients.

Since the company's inception, Ben Gordon says My Hero Productions has worked with a variety of companies, from Fortune 500 firms to small privately owned businesses. While My Hero Productions does not work as the main advertising agency for large corporations, they are brought in for strategizing, creative projects and crisis management, among other things.

While their list of clients is long, Ben Gordon is careful to point out that they never work with more than three to five clients at a time.

"This is brainpower. We're sitting around thinking about how we're going to execute strategic marketing ideas. It's not something that you just punch in and start stamping out widgets. You have to have enough brainpower for everybody."

Ben Gordon believes that what makes his company stand out is honesty.

"It's our absolute, sheer audacity to hold the mirrors up to our clients' businesses and say, 'This is what is. ... If we can't agree on a strategy that's really going to move the needle for you, we're out of here.' "

The Gordons founded their firm last spring, after working a variety of industry jobs over the years. Most recently, Ben Gordon worked as an associate creative director at E.B. Lane, and Jane Gordon worked in public relations at Raskin Dalton, Inc., both in Phoenix.

In addition to her work at My Hero Productions, Jane Gordon is involved in community service work. Some of her work includes public relations for last year's "Taste of the Nation" culinary event, as well as a 15-year stint of public relations for Rainbow Acres Ranch in Camp Verde - a ranch that serves physically and mentally disabled adults.

Ben Gordon was born in New York and came to Phoenix via Los Angeles. Jane Gordon is a native Phoenician. The couple met in the early 1990s, through the industry, and they married a year and a half ago. The Gordons are the parents of an 11-year-old son, Spencer, a sixth-grader at Madison Number One. They also have a new baby on the way, due in November.
