Chabad buys E.V. site

Chabad of the East Valley closed escrow Oct. 5 on the future site of the Center for Jewish Life.

A capital campaign for $1.8 million soon will be underway, and Chabad hopes to raise enough funds to break ground next year.

The facility planned for the 2 1/2 acre site on the southeast corner of McClintock Drive and Ray Road in Chandler will be "a building for the entire community," said Rabbi Mendy Deitsch of Chabad of the East Valley.

All funds for the purchase of the land were raised locally, Deitsch said. So far $350,000 has been raised.

The architect, Baldinger Studios of Tempe, has drawn plans for the building. Michael Pollack is the chairman of the building committee and the general contractor.

The first phase of the 6,000-7,000 square-foot Center for Jewish Life building will house the synagogue's Hebrew school, classrooms, worship services and programming for all age groups.

Building plans include a kosher kitchen, offices, lending library with Jewish videos and software, and a sanctuary that will also serve as a multipurpose room. Expandable walls will allow the building to accommodate multiple size groups.

A later phase will include a mikvah and additional classrooms, Deitsch noted.

"This is a project that's going to unite the Jewish community," Deitsch said. "It's a breakthrough for the East Valley."

Approximately 95 families participate in programs at Chabad of the East Valley, which was founded by Deitsch and wife Shternie, three years ago. Chabad of the East Valley is financially independent from Chabad of Arizona, based in Phoenix.
