Lady Liberty due for reinforcements

Editor:
On Sept. 11, the land of the free became the land of the unprotected. As in the attack on Pearl Harbor, America has again shown itself susceptible to tragedy and crisis; therefore, our nation must balance its pristine ideal of liberty with its pressing need for security.

Clearly, a bulwark must be erected if we are to emerge from the sweeping fears shrouding American soil. Pride and confidence must supersede terror and anxiety. However, there lies a limit to advancing security measures. With phone tapping, publication restrictions and racial profiling, history will repeat itself, and what was once the Red Scare may quickly become the Sikh Scare. While freedom and security can coexist, the impulsive decisions that characterize America's past may distort our nation's judgment again, denying it the hope of a freedom-filled future. Thus, if America is to live up to its standards of "liberty and justice for all," it must first strike a harmonious medium between freedom and security to fit its new mantra: "The land of the free and the home of the safe."

Anti-Israel bias

Editor:
As a regular listener and contributor to our local National Public Radio affiliate, KJZZ 91.5 FM in Phoenix, I was deeply disturbed and troubled by the anti-Israel bias indicated by the statistics in the CAMERA ad in last Sunday's New York Times (Aug. 19, page 25).

What is NPR going to do to make sure that the current imbalance is fixed to reflect a more balanced approach? As a public institution and a federal beneficiary of federal funds, it has an obligation to report the news in an impartial and non-biased manner.

Until NPR changes to a more balanced approach, I am suspending all future contributions to NPR and its affiliates and am asking my friends and associates to do the same.
