Letters to the EditorSeptember 28, 2001
Send a messageEditor:In the aftermath of our national tragedy on Sept. 11, Balbir Singh Sodhi, a Sikh, was shot in Mesa while planting flowers in front of his shop. In the tradition of Sikhs, he wore a turban and beard. He was killed simply because of the way he looked. A contribution to the Balbir Singh Sodhi Memorial Fund or a condolence note or e-mail sent to the Sodhi family might send a powerful spiritual message from members of the Jewish community that we stand behind our fellow Americans and deplore hate crimes. Contributions may be sent to Bank One Arizona, account #1308-8566, Mail Code ASI-1285, 241 N. Central Ave., Phoenix, AZ 85004. Messages may be sent to BalbirSingh@sikhnet.com. Kenneth A. Harris Peoria Let us applaud our American heroesEditor:Sept. 11 was a day of terror and a day of heroism in America. As we pause to remember the atrocities, let us applaud the courageous fire fighters, police officers, and emergency medical technicians throughout America. In New York City and at the Pentagon, our homeland warriors saved many lives while jeopardizing their own safety. Always remember, these men and women are our neighbors. When they request our support during times of calm, let us remember that they are the first to respond during times of crisis. As our young men and women in the armed forces deploy to engage America's enemies, let us honor their service by leaving no doubt that we fully support their efforts and courage. Roger Hartstone U.S. Congressional Candidate Flagstaff Coming together for prayer, comfortEditor:Our memorial service to honor the victims of the attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, preceded our regular Friday night Shabbat service, Sept. 14. It seemed inconceivable that a sanctuary seating 500 could hold the 900 people who came together in this time of despair. By coming together for prayer, people were comforted through faith and found hope instead of despair. Our spirits were lifted. We commend all religious institutions that held memorial services. Joel Smith Director, Member Services Temple Beth Israel Justice, not revengeEditor:In the aftermath of the ruthless attack on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, I implore the leaders of the United States to ensure that justice be served by protecting the innocent citizens of all nations. I beg President Bush to maintain the civil liberties of all U.S. residents, protect the human rights of all people at home and abroad, and guarantee that this attempted attack on the principles and freedoms of the United States will not succeed. I plead for a thorough investigation of the terrorist events before any retaliation. I call for PEACE and JUSTICE, not revenge. Jessica Davis Glendale |
