Ties to the past

Editor:
Last spring, Tri-City Jewish Community Center offered us the opportunity to compile a family oral history as part of a fund-raising effort for a new facility.

The flyer about the project sat on my kitchen counter until finally my spouse, Arnie Maltz, and I decided to "just do it." We contacted Bob Bernstein, the interviewer, who explained the process and set a date.

Bob was patient and knowledgeable. He led us through the interview and videotaping in a gentle, solicitous manner, bringing back a flood of memories.

Each person has a unique history with ties to the river of memories of our people. We recommend this experience, still available at the JCC, as a way to connect with both past and future generations.

We now have a treasure to share with our children.

Common concerns

Editor:
I read your paper. Thousands of miles from Arizona, I nevertheless find its contents and the comments of your journalists often strike a chord.

What is particularly interesting to me is that despite our geographical divide everything you write about is of day to day concern to us.

We remain one people despite everything.

I speak as a first generation Englishman. Most of my family came from Austria and was wiped out in the Holocaust.

My eldest daughter lives in Jerusalem with her two daughters Noa and Ella. She teaches Japanese at Hebrew University.

If only their grandparents and great grandparents had lived to see the day.

Lead the way

Editor:
Your editorial on Aug. 24 (George, do it!) was timely and uplifting. There is so little support of Israel emanating from our newspapers regardless of their political leanings. It is incumbent upon the Jewish press to lead the way and let the country know that Israel and its people do not have a "duty to die."
