250 years of Jewish history

A comprehensive look at the 250-year history of Jews in America, "They Came for Good: A History of Jews in the United States," airs 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 16, on KAET-Channel 8.

The documentary, underwritten by the Arizona area office of the American Jewish Committee, chronicles the arrival of Jews in the 17th century and illuminates United States history through the eyes of American Jews. It is a story of the tension between loyalty to one's native traditions and the pressure to assimilate. For Jews, the process of collectively finding themselves was complicated by their many classifications as a religion, nation, ethnic group, culture and civilization.

The documentary covers the period from 1654 - when 23 Sephardic Jews first arrived through New York harbor - through the American Revolution, the Civil War, the arrival of German Jews, the California Gold Rush and the nation's westward expansion, until 1880, the start of the great European migration.
