Obituaries

Sol Simon

Sol Simon of Phoenix died Aug. 16, 2001. He was 79. He was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., and recently moved to Phoenix from Torrance, Calif. He was previously a Phoenix resident for 20 years. He was the retired owner of Miracle Mile Delis and served in the U.S. Army from 1939-1945, with a European tour during World War II.

Survivors include his daughters, Ronni Johnson and Elaine Holgate, both of Phoenix; five grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Services were held at Beth El Cemetery, with Rabbi Alan Bright officiating. Arrangements were by Sinai Mortuary. Contributions are suggested to American Cancer Society, 2929 E. Thomas Road, Phoenix 85016.



Hershey Williams

Hershey Harold Williams of Scottsdale died Aug. 19, 2001. He was 79. He was born in Chicago and moved to Arizona 26 years ago. He was a retired salesman and served in the U.S. Army.

Survivors include his wife, Harriet; sons, Mark of Fairfax, Calif., Steve of Vallejo, Calif., and Jeff of Willmette, Ill.; and two grandchildren.

Services were held at Green Acres Chapel, with Rabbi Mark J. Bisman officiating. Arrangements were by Sinai Mortuary. Contributions are suggested to Har Zion Congregation, 6140 E. Thunderbird Road, Scottsdale 85254.



Ruth Silverman

Ruth Silverman of Phoenix died Aug. 21, 2001. She was 81. She was born in Chicago and moved to Arizona four years ago from California. She was a retired retail sales employee and was a member of NA'AMAT.

Survivors include her daughter, Harriet Schwartz of Arizona; son, Phillip of Texas; sister, Naomi Louis of California; brothers, Alex Goldberg of Pennsylvania, and Max Goldberg of Illinois; and four grandchildren.

Services were held at Beth Israel Cemetery, with Rabbi Barry L. Cohen officiating. Arrangements were by Sinai Mortuary. Contributions are suggested to Hospice of Arizona, 2222 W. Northern Ave., Phoenix 85021.



Jacob Chalfin

Jacob Chalfin, MD, 91, of Sun City, AZ passed away August 20, 2001. Born May 23, 1910 in Cleveland Ohio. Graduate of Central High School, Cleveland, Ohio; Pre-Medical Studies at Ohio State University; and MD Graduate of Chicago Medical School/University of Health Sciences, North Chicago, Illinois. Medical practice was in General Family Practice and Industrial and Occupational Medicine for 40 years in Venice, Illinois. Retired in 1976 and moved to Arizona. Life member of American Medical Association, Illinois State Medical Society, American Academy of Family Physicians, Arizona Academy of Family Physicians, American Geriatrics Society, Industrial and Occupational Medical Association, American Association of Railway Physicians; and member of 50-year club of Illinois Medical Society and American Medical Association.

Pre-deceased by his wife of 51 years, Ione Chalfin; parents Rose and Fischel Chalfin; daughter Judith Kivett; brothers Dr. Lewis Chalfin and Nathan Chalfin; sister Rebecca Chalfin; son-in-law Stanley Sandler; and granddaughter Susan Ruth Sandler.

Survived by daughter Barbara Sandler of Phoenix; four grandchildren: Michael Sandler of Phoenix, David Sandler of Huntington Beach, California, Lisa Kivett of Dallas, Texas, and Jeffrey Kivett of Kansas City, Missouri; four great grandchildren: Tiffany Sandler of Phoenix, Nathan Sandler of Phoenix, Jordan Kivett of Olathe, Kansas and Rachel Kivett of Olathe, Kansas.

Services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 26 at Sunland Lakeside Chapel, 15826 Del Webb Blvd., Sun City. Internment to follow at Sunland Memorial Park. Contributions are suggested to Sun Health Hospice, P.O. Box 2015, Sun City, AZ 85372.
