Loca Rosa selected as artist for JCC

Mesa resident Tish Dvorkin - who uses the stage name Loca Rosa - has been selected as the Artist in Residence for 2001-2002 at the Tri-City Jewish Community Center.

The center received a $1,500 grant from the Arizona Commission on the Arts June 26 to help fund the program.

Loca Rosa will facilitate workshops with all of the preschool, kindergarten and day school classes. The four-week program includes storytelling, crafts and singing folksongs and holiday songs in Hebrew, Ladino, Russian and Yiddish.

The artist-in-residence program was started "to enhance the cultural richness of our school program," said Ilene Blau, director of the center.

Loca Rosa, who performs in concert, multicultural festivals, schools and other venues solo and with the Loca Rosa and Byelaroza Eastern European Folk Dance and Music Ensemble, has been on the commission's artist roster since 1993.

Dvorkin is also the music specialist in the religious school of Temple Beth Sholom in Chandler.

In addition to the JCC grant, the commission also awarded a $12,290 grant to the Arizona Jewish Theater Company for organization development and a $3,000 grant for a co-production of "Visiting Mr. Green" with Tucson's Invisible Theatre.
