King David loses eighth-grade class

BETH OLSON

While several Jewish day schools in the Valley are adding additional grade levels this year, The King David School's eighth-grade class has been eliminated for the 2001-2002 school year.

According to Esther Feuerberg, head of school, only two students were enrolled in the eighth-grade class for next year. Both have since chosen to withdraw.

"While we were willing to accommodate and to individualize the program for students, they would clearly not have the advantage of having a full class with only two students enrolled," Feuerberg explained.

She said that because she only recently started in her new position as head of school, she does not know how many students were in last year's seventh-grade class, nor does she know where those students have chosen to attend school for this upcoming school year.

Feuerberg emphasized that one of her goals for the coming school year is to regroup the middle school, including the hiring of new teachers.

"Sometimes you have to take a step back in order to take more solid strides ahead," said Feuerberg, "It's unfortunate that we don't have an eighth grade this year, but it does present an opportunity to rebuild and strengthen the middle school and open up with full force."
