Young actress aims for the stars

Lauren Zoe Bruno is used to seeing her name in lights. In fact, the soon-to-be seventh grader has already decided on a stage name (Zoe), has a lengthy resume and hopes to work in the performing arts when she grows up.
Several years of professional training and acting lessons prepared Bruno for a four-hour audition to land the role of Brigitta in an upcoming production of "The Sound of Music." The musical, presented by the Stagebrush Theatre in conjunction with the Greasepaint Youtheatre, opens tonight (Friday, July 20) and runs through Sunday, Aug. 5.
The best part of acting, according to Bruno, is the exposure.
"I like seeing myself in the newspaper or on video or magazines," she says. "I hope to be in commercials and movies, but I'm not there yet."
The 12-year-old Pardes Jewish Day School student has always had a flair for the performing arts, according to Bruno's mother, Mara Addison.
"When she was 2 years old, we knew she was going to be an actress," said Addison. "She used to put a video camera in her room and tape herself."
Bruno's professional training includes on-camera acting studio workshops with MB Creative Communications in Scottsdale, an audition workshop in Phoenix, Fountain Hills Community Acting Workshop and voice lessons. She has also taken gymnastics, ballet, jazz, piano and acting lessons.
Since 1997, Bruno has sung with the choir at Temple Solel in Paradise Valley - including a solo for an audience of more than 200 - and sang as a volunteer in nursing homes.
In addition, Bruno sang with Craig 'n Co., a Jewish musical group for young audiences, during a December 2000 performance at Har Zion Congregation in Scottsdale. She is planning another performance with the group when it visits Temple Solel next spring.
Bruno is portrayed on the inside cover of the Jewish Federation of Greater Phoenix's annual campaign brochure, released last March. She is also depicted on the video catalog cover for Global Video Productions, an educational video company.
Bruno says she enjoys art, drawing and poetry in her spare time. Her other hobbies include designing clothes and hairstyles.
Bruno is the daughter of Mara and Doug Addison of Scottsdale. She also has two siblings, Jordan, 6; and Justin, 23. They are members of Temple Solel.
