Day school fund grants scholarships

More than $500,000 in scholarships have been awarded to Jewish day school students in the Valley by the Jewish Community Day School Scholarship Fund, according to Fred Zeidman, assistant executive director of the Jewish Federation of Greater Phoenix.

The committee, headed by chairman Randy Warner, met on Wednesday, March 21, to review the 114 scholarship applications that had been received by the federation. Because some families filed one application for two or more students, the total number of applicants was 155.

So far, 140 students have been awarded $530,000 in scholarships, with a second round of approximately $30,000 in funds to be distributed in June, said Zeidman.

"The intent of the second round (of funding) is for when a family suddenly has an unforeseen dramatic change in circumstance that they really would need the help, or families that would need help and are late in deciding to enroll their children," explained Zeidman.

Individual scholarship awards range from $1,000 to approximately $7,000, said Zeidman. Information on the amount of money distributed to each school will be available after the second round of scholarships have been awarded.

The Jewish Community Day School Scholarship Fund was created in 1999 to take advantage of the Arizona private school tuition tax credit. The federation oversees the organization that provides scholarships for the Pardes Jewish Day School, The King David School, The Tri-City Jewish Community Center Day School, Temple Beth El Kindergarten, Valley of the Sun JCC Kindergarten and The Jess Schwartz Jewish Community High School.

Applications for the second round of scholarships are due by Friday, June 1. For application information, contact the federation at 602-274-1800.
