Barry Cohen named Jewish News editor

Staff Report
Rabbi Barry Cohen this week was named editor of Jewish News of Greater Phoenix. Cohen joined the newspaper's staff as community editor in May 2000.

"Barry has demonstrated a rare combination of strengths," said Florence Eckstein, Jewish News publisher and former editor. "His education, intellectual vigor, knowledge of American Jewish community and vision uniquely qualify him to lead our first-rate editorial team in delivering information to our fast-growing community about Jewish life in the Valley and throughout the Jewish world," Eckstein said.

Cohen, an ordained rabbi, earned a Master of Arts in Hebrew Letters at Hebrew Union College - Jewish Institution of Religion and a Bachelor of Arts in philosophy at the University of Michigan. Prior to coming to work at Jewish News, he was assistant rabbi at Temple Beth Israel in Scottsdale.

During his tenure at Jewish News, Cohen has done local news and feature writing, including covering government and politics; and also wire service editing and design supervision.

"I feel fortunate to have been given this opportunity and vote of confidence," said Cohen. "There's an excellent chemistry at Jewish News. It is healthy, supportive and challenging. I have wonderful mentors and co-workers.

"This is a unique time to be a part of the Valley's vibrant, growing Jewish community. I see Jewish News not only as reporting, but as participating," added Cohen. "This poses a demanding but inviting responsibility. I look forward to readers' feedback as we foster dialogue, challenge one another, respect what divides us and embrace what unites us."

Editorial team members include Vicki Cabot, editorial page editor; Tami Bickley, associate editor; Leisah Namm, assistant editor; Alisa Berman, special sections editor; Beth Olson, staff writer; and Jessica Barber, editorial intern.

Cabot, a writer and editor at Jewish News for over 15 years, writes news and feature stories and editorials, oversees the op-ed pages, including letters from the editor, and is formulating plans for a monthly book feature.

Bickley does news and feature writing, copy-editing and writes columns on food, fashion and pets. She has been at Jewish News since January 1999.

Namm, who joined Jewish News in January 2000, writes news and feature articles, copy-edits, and edits the community calendar. Her beats include arts, synagogues and the Jewish community centers. In addition, she is editor of Jewish News' annual Community Directory.

Berman became a member of the Jewish News staff in January 2001 as editor of two major special sections a month and weekly features on health, home, auto and travel. She also writes news and feature stories.

Olson writes news and feature stories; covers education, youth and business news; writes obituaries in each weekly issue and compiles monthly features on Web sites and local volunteer opportunities. She joined the staff in July 2000.

Barber, a journalism student at Arizona State University, came to Jewish News in February. She works under Namm's supervision, writing milestone announcements, including lifecycle events and honors. She also writes People on the Move items.

"The excellence of our editorial team members reveals itself on our pages every week," Eckstein said. "I eagerly anticipate the changes they will bring in the coming months and years, as we steadily move forward in serving current readers and reaching out to new readers."
