Preparatory high school launches capital campaign

Phoenix Preparatory High Schools has launched a campaign to raise $5.5 million to expand the schools' facilities and services.
Plans include constructing a 23,000 square-foot, two-story building with approximately 17 classrooms, and a full-size gymnasium with locker rooms, said Michael Spingarn, president of Development Associates Group, Ltd., a fund-raising and management firm based in New Rochelle, N.Y., hired to handle the campaign.
The facility is expected to accommodate 200 students - 100 girls and 100 boys - at the current high school location at Chabad of Arizona, 2110 E. Lincoln Drive in Phoenix.
Current enrollment at the school is 20 students, said Spingarn.
Rabbi Zalman Levertov, dean of students, said the current space is not large enough to accommodate the anticipated growth of the school.
Levertov said that a campus with its own modern facility will attract more students.
He hopes the school will raise parents' awareness of the availability of a Jewish education locally. "It will only enhance the growth of the community," he emphasized.
In addition to the education facilities, two dormitories for residential students are planned, with separate housing for boys and girls. Levertov said the location of the dormitories, yet to be determined, would be within walking distance of the campus.
Levertov said the residential facilities would likely attract students from Southwestern cities that lack Jewish high schools, such as Tucson; El Paso, Texas; and Las Vegas.
Spingarn said the $5.5 million would finance construction of the buildings, as well as establish a reserve fund for operations as enrollment increases to capacity.
The architect for the project is the firm of Irwin G. Pasternack, and the builder is Bulman Development. Groundbreaking is expected in August, with plans to occupy the facilities at the beginning of the 2002-2003 school year.
