Purim festivities

Purim comes to the Valley once again and carnivals, Megillah readings and hamantaschen abound.



Temple Kol Ami holds a carnival with booths, rides, games and food noon-1:30 p.m. Sunday, March 4, at the temple, 15030 N. 64th Street, Scottsdale.

At 7 p.m. Thursday, March 8, congregants will assemble for the reading of the Megillah, followed by a musical comedy "Haman Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest."

Chabad of the East Valley holds its fourth annual Purim-around-the-world party at 5:20 p.m. Friday, March 9, at the Windmill Inn, 3535 W. Chandler Blvd., Chandler.

The event, titled "Purim in the Shtetl," begins with a Megillah reading and slide show, followed by a traditional shtetl meal of wine, challah, gefilte fish and more. Comedian couple Ruth Devorah and Eli Wallen perform.

"The Sounds of Purim," a musical parody of "The Sound of Music," will be featured at the Temple Chai Purim Spiel service 7 p.m. Thursday, March 8, at the temple, 4645 E. Marilyn Road, Phoenix.

A bring-your-own dairy potluck dinner starts at 5:30 p.m. The service includes performances by Temple Chai junior and adult choirs and the program includes a Purim costume parade, a Megillah reading and refreshments.

Temple Emanuel, Temple Beth Sholom and the Tri-City Jewish Community Center sponsor a community Purim carnival noon-3 p.m. Sunday, March 4, at the Tri-City JCC, 1965 E. Hermosa Drive, Tempe.

The carnival features game booths, face painting, kosher lunch, hamantaschen and magician Bruce Wall.

Chabad of Phoenix holds a Megillah reading followed by music and refreshments at 7 p.m. Thursday, March 8, at the Chabad center, 2110 E. Lincoln Drive, Phoenix.

Chabad continues the Purim celebration at 8 a.m., Friday, March 9, with services followed by a Megillah reading and a Purim meal at 11:30 a.m.

A Purim Shabbat Persian meal will be held 6:15 p.m. Saturday, March 10, at the center. Cost is $18 adult; $40 family. To attend, call 602-944-2753 by March 7.



"Purim in Peking," sponsored by Chabad of the West Valley, will be held 6:45-8:45 p.m. Thursday, March 8, at Desert Sky Middle School, 5130 West Grovers, Glendale.

The event begins with a Megillah reading and a slide show about Purim, followed by a kosher buffet dinner, a magic show, a musical performance by Zakah and a Chinese auction.

Chabad of Arizona sponsors Shushan Purim, a singles dinner party to be held 8:15-10:30 p.m. Saturday, March 10, in a private home.

Rabbi Dan Hayman will lead a D'var Torah discussion.

Beth El Congregation holds its annual Purim carnival noon-3 p.m. Sunday, March 4, at the synagogue, 1118 West Glendale Ave., Phoenix.

Events include game booths, face painting, a demonstration by the Arizona Sunrays Gymnastics & Dance Center and music by Mirie and Lisa Levey.

Beth El will also have a Megillah reading followed by a Purim Spiel at 6:15 p.m. Thursday, March 8, at the synagogue.

Phoenix Hebrew Academy will hold its annual Purim carnival 3-6 p.m. Sunday, March 4, at the school, 515 E. Bethany Home Road, Phoenix.

The carnival includes a magic show, costume contest, a "moon walk" and food.
