Obituaries

Ruth Rubin

Ruth Rubin of Phoenix died Feb. 27, 2001. She was 87. She was born in New York City and moved to Arizona five years ago. She was a homemaker.

Survivors include her daughter, Linda Sandler of Phoenix; son, Jesse of Los Angeles; sister, Lily Brill of Washington, D.C.; brothers, Mike Mersel and Ossie Mersel, both of Miami; and four grandchildren.

Services were held at Green Acres Cemetery, with Rabbi William Berk officiating. Arrangements were by Sinai Mortuary. Contributions are suggested to American Heart Association, 2929 S. 48th St., Tempe 85282; or Hospice of the Valley, 1510 E. Flower St., Phoenix 85014.



Joseph Watchman

Joseph Watchman of Scottsdale died Feb. 20, 2001. He was 80. He was born in Romania and moved to Arizona 35 years ago from New York. He was a retired podiatrist and served in the Army Air Corps in World War II. He was a past member of B'nai B'rith and Temple Beth Israel.

Survivors include his daughter, Susan of Phoenix; sons, Hal of Arcadia, Calif., and Ken of Tempe; sisters, Helen Adelman and Rose Smith, both of New York City; and brother, Sigmund of New Jersey.

Services were held at Sinai Mortuary Chapel, with Rabbi Martin S. Scharf officiating. Arrangements were by Sinai Mortuary. Contributions are suggested to Kivel Campus of Care, 3020 N. 36th St., Phoenix 85018.



Richard Cantor

Richard Stephen Cantor of Scottsdale died Feb. 27, 2001. He was 57. He was born in Cleveland and moved to Arizona in 1957. He was a teacher, writer and editor.

Survivors include his wife, Nancy; sons, Stephen and Michael; mother, Marjorie Michaels Cantor; brother, Jeff; and sister, Carolyn.

Arrangements were by Messinger Mortuary.



Dr. Julius Citron

Dr. Julius Citron, 89, of Phoenix, passed away February 15, 2001. He was born on February 7, 1912 in Newport, Kentucky. He attended Clifton Grammar School, Cincinnati, OH, Ohio Military Institute, Phoenix Union High School, 1931, Phoenix College and Ohio College of Podiatry, 1934 - 1937. Dr. Citron's internship was at the Cleveland Foot Clinic, 1937. He started his general podiatry practice in 1937.

He was an established investigator for Squibb Institute for Medical Research, 1970 - 1971 and Syntex Laboratories. He attended these courses: Arizona Podiatry Seminar, American College of Foot Surgery, Western Diabetic Association, American Podiatry Association, Western Region Convention A.P.A., Four Corners Podiatry Seminar, National Podiatry Association, and International Chiropody Meeting, London, England.

The following are the certifications he received: American College of Foot Surgeons; American College of Foot Orthopedists; Pedic Research Society; The Royal Society of Health (England); Diplomate, American Board of Podiatric Orthodpedics.

Dr. Citron held membership in many professional organizations including the following: American Podiatry Association, American College of Foot Surgeons, National and Western: American Hospital Association (Podiatry); American College of Foot Orthopedists; Federal Podiatry Association; National Association of VA Physicians and Association of Military Surgeons of the United States. His licensure is in Arizona.

His publications included the Journal of Foot Surgery, April, 1967; The American College of Foot Surgeon Journal, October, 1966; Federation of Podiatry Boards Bulletin, and A.P.A. Journal 1981.

Here is a list of the many awards and honors that he received: Special Award, American College of Foot Surgeons, 1967 and 1970; President of National Federation of Podiatry Boards; President of Arizona State Board of Podiatry Examiners; President of Arizona Podiatry Association; Secretary of Arizona State Board of Podiatry Examiners; delegate to American Podiatry Association; Arizona Podiatry Man of the Year; author of Arizona Podiatry Law; organized Arizona Foot Surgeons Seminar; organized Arizona Podiatry Association; official delegate ACFS London meeting.

Professional appointments included: Surgical instructor for residents (NAC Community Hospital); Senior staff surgeon, NAC Community Hospital, 1969 - 1975; Memorial Hospital, 1959; Arizona State Hospital, 1937 - 1955; Doctors Hospital, VA Hospital, 1966- 1982; visiting lecturer, Illinois College of Podiatric Medicine, 1977- 1982; clinical assistant professor, California College of Podiatric Medicine, 1981 - present; co-author V.A. Diabetic Care Book; designed SCS shoe and special stocking. He was a member of the American Legion and V.F.W.

He is survived by his wife, Toby, son, Ken Citron, daughter, Cyndee Plascencia, four grandchildren, and two great granchildren.

Lily Cousins

Lily Cousins was born in Detroit, Michigan on December 16, 1916 and passed away February 23, 2001 in Scottsdale, AZ. She moved to Phoenix in 1978 with her late husband, Leonard Cousins, to be near her daughter and grandchildren. She was an interior designer in both Michigan and Arizona.

She was a talented and beautiful person who decorated the lives of those she loved and who will live in the hearts and memories of her family and friends. She was a woman whose life can never be captured in mere words, but who will enjoy knowing that her family tried. Her life is measured not only by the number of her days and her many accomplishments, but by the many people who loved her.

She is survived by her daughter Linda (David) Kaplan, granddaughter Debra (Steven) Prokopek, grandsons Michael and Allan Kaplan, great granchildren Devon and Blake Prokopek, her brother, Irving Taran, sister, Alice Taran and niece Nancy Mendleson.

Funeral services and internment were held February 26. Contributions in her memory are suggested to Hospice of the Valley, 1510 E. Flower St., Phoenix, AZ 85014 or Temple Chai, 4645 E. Marilyn Rd., Phoenix, AZ 85032. Arrangements by Sinai Mortuary.



Samuel Rubenstein

Samuel Rubenstein, 81, of Golden Valley, MN died February 12, 2001. Preceded in death by parents, Jacob and Frieda Rubenstein. His wife of 57 years, Jeanette, passed away on February 18, 2001. Survived by daughters and son-in-law, Fredda and Rabbi Mark Bisman, Beth Rubenstein; son, David Rubenstein; sisters, Ann Bregman and Lillian Sakol; grandchildren, Sarah Bisman and Aaron Bisman; sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law nieces, nephews; great-nieces and great-nephews.

Samuel worked over 50 years in the freight transportation industry. He was the founder and owner since 1961 of Rubenstein Logistics, Inc. He was active in related professional organizations and was an active member of Beth El Synagogue. Funeral services were held Wednesday, February 14 at Beth El Synagogue, St. Louis Park, MN.
