Local women share tools for success

Several local women served as sources for Scottsdale author Joan Eleanor Gustafson's new book, "A Woman Can Do That! Ten Strategies for Creating Success in Your Life" (Leader Dynamics, $14.95 paperback).

One of those women is Connie Wolf of Scottsdale, president of CBW, Inc., a pro- fessional coaching and consulting company she began three years ago.

Wolf works with clients "who are ready to make a positive change in their life and take action," serving as a sounding board for corporate employees, managers and entrepreneurs, as well as people making moves toward a new career. Her services include management consultation, business and personal coaching, career development and marketing planning.

Wolf has been a businesswoman for 30 years, including an eight-year stint in Belgium with Dow Corning Corporation as vice president of human resources and communications. She met Gustafson while in Belgium, and the women continued their social relationship when they each moved to Arizona, where Wolf has lived for three years now.

In her experiences in the corporate world and her training as a coach at Coach University, a two-year coach training program conducted by telephone, Wolf has utilized many of the strategies that are outlined in Gustafson's book.

    The strategies Gustafson suggests are:
  • Believe in yourself
  • Dare to dream
  • Determine your priorities
  • Set powerful goals
  • Ready - aim - take action
  • Stay focused
  • Remain positive, no matter what
  • Live your life with integrity
  • Enjoy the moment
  • Continue to learn

In the book, Gustafson uses Wolf as an example of someone who stays focused and remains positive.

Wolf attributes her success to being willing to take risks - but only after a careful examination of the consequences.

"One of the things I'll do is I'll ask myself, 'What is the worst thing that could happen if I try to do this, or go after that?' If it's something I'm willing to deal with, then I'll try and make the decision to go after it. If it's not something I'm willing to handle, I may not take that risk," she explains.

Wolf calls Gustafson a "role model" and feels that the ideas presented in Gustaf-son's book are the tools necessary for success.

"I think the book is wonderful for women who are looking to move forward in their lives. It's a combination of strategies that - put together and practiced - not only will help them with success in their work, but in their whole life."
