Artist wins award

Carol Berger Taylor, a local artist and an art teacher at Camelback Desert School in Paradise Valley, received the "People's Choice" award Jan. 26 at the opening of the 23rd Annual Contemporary Crafts exhibit in the Mesa Arts Center.

Taylor is one of 30 artists selected from 319 national applicants to be chosen for this event, juried by Kenneth R. Trapp, curator in charge of the Smithsonian Renwick Gallery of the National Museum of Art. The works of this gallery are displayed within the White House.

Taylor's entry is a basketry woven metal sculpture of a Havdallah spice container. The piece is a tribute to her late father, a Holocaust survivor, and to the vast Judaic art that was destroyed and converted into metal for weapons during World War II, according to a press release.

In this exhibit piece, copper and sterling strands combine to make a sturdy base and extend into an eight-inch organic form.

Her art will be on display through Feb. 24 at the Mesa Arts Center, 155 N. Center. Call 480-644-2242.
