Valley celebrates holiday

A few new trees will be planted throughout the Valley next week to celebrate Tu B'Shevat, the new year for trees, which falls on Thursday, Feb. 8.

One community celebration is the Jewish National Fund Tu B'Shevat festival, noon-4 p.m. at the Scottsdale Civic Center Amphitheater, 75th and Main streets.

The festival includes crafts; musical performances by Israeli recording artists Maya Haddi and Sharon Farber; contests; a tree-planting ceremony led by Scottsdale Mayor Mary Manross; dancing; a "Walk for Israel" sponsored by the Future Leadership of the JNF; and the final count of the Blue Box Boom fund-raising competition between local Jewish day schools.

Benley Manor will hold a traditional Tu B'Shevat seder 4:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 8. The seder includes a full meal, a tasting of 15 fruits, reading, discussions and songs.

All dietary laws will be observed. Cost is $12.

Tree planting, children's activities and food are all part of the Northwest Valley Jewish Family Alliance Tu B'Shevat celebration 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 4, at Canyon Elementary Amphitheater, 5490 Paradise Lane, Glendale.

Shoah survivors and children of survivors will plant Jerusalem pine saplings from Israel, donated by Jewish National Fund, with Temple Chai religious school pupils at a Tu B'Shevat ceremony 9:45 a.m.-noon Sunday, Feb. 4, at Temple Chai, 4645 E. Marilyn Road, Phoenix.

It is a joint project by The Shoah Remembrance Center for Reflection, Learning and Discussion committee, Temple Chai religious school and the Shalom Center for Healing, Education and Growth.

Or Adam Congregation for Humanistic Judaism will hold a Tu B'Shevat Shabbat service at 7 p.m. tonight (Feb. 2), at the Tri-City Jewish Community Center, 1965 E. Hermosa Drive, Tempe.

Following the service will be a discussion about the history of Sephardic Jews.
