Obituaries

Ronald Beller

Ronald S. Beller of Los Angeles died Jan. 23, 2001. He was 71. He was the father of Robert Beller of Phoenix. He was born in Los Angeles and was an accountant, a veteran of the Korean War and a founding member of Ner Tamid in Downey, Calif.

Survivors include his sons, Scott of Los Angeles, Michael of Richmond, Calif., and Curtis of Salt Lake City; sister, Beverly Byer of Los Angeles; and five grandchildren.

Services were held at Home of Peace Memorial Park in Los Angeles. Arrangements were by Malinow & Silverman Mortuary. Contributions are suggested to the American Heart Association, 2929 S. 48th St., Tempe 85282.



Irving Bulman

Irving Bulman of Phoenix died Jan. 26, 2001. He was 93. He was born in Poland and moved to Arizona one year ago from New York. He was a retired furrier and a member of the Chabad-Lubavitch Center.

Survivors include his sons, Allan and Steven, both of Phoenix; sister, Shirley Sutton of Miami; and three grandchildren.

Services were held in Elmont, N.Y. Arrangements were by Sinai Mortuary. Contributions are suggested to the Phoenix Chabad Center, 2110 E. Lincoln Drive, Phoenix 85016.



Anne Bruno

Anne A. Bruno of Sun City West died Jan 28, 2001. She was 85. She was born in Schenectady, N.Y., and moved to Arizona 23 years ago. She was an artist and former realtor.

Survivors include her daughter, Merle of Hadley, Mass.; son, Robert of Paradise Valley; and two grandchildren.

Private services were held. Arrangements were by Sinai Mortuary. Contributions are suggested to Hampshire College Library for Art Books, In Memory of Anne A. Bruno, Office of Institutional Advancement, Hampshire College, Amherst, MA 01002.



Edward Varmaz

Edward Varmaz of Mesa died Jan. 28, 2001. He was 60. He was born in Russia and moved to Arizona nine years ago from New York. He was a retired owner of a dry cleaning store.

Survivors include his wife, Hannah; daughter, Rachel of Mesa; sons, Daniel and Zachery, both of Mesa; and brother, Fema of Long Island, N.Y.

Services were held at Beth Israel Cemetery with Rabbi Dan Hayman officiating. Arrangements were by Sinai Mortuary. Contributions are suggested to American Cancer Society, 2929 E. Thomas Road, Phoenix 85016.



Charles Kalina

Charles Kalina, 87, passed away Friday, January 26, 2001. He was born in Davenport, Iowa and moved to Phoenix 45 years ago from Illinois. He was a retired real estate developer, a 32nd degree Mason, a member of Temple Beth Israel, a member of Elks Lodge BPOE #2729 and Lewkowitz Lodge B'nai B'rith. He is survived by his son Ken Kalina and daughter Fredi (Jeff) Harwin, both of Phoenix, and sister Virginia Hoffman of Houston, TX. Grandchildren Michelle (Justin) Bradovich and David Harwin. Great-grandchildren Chase Keadon Bradovich and Ayden Charles Bradovich also survive. Funeral services were held Tuesday, January 30, 2001 in Sinai Mortuary Chapel, 4538 N. 16th St., in Phoenix. In lieu of flowers contributions are requested to Kivel Care Center, 3020 N. 36th St., Phoenix, AZ 85018.



Shirley Lebovitz

Shirley Lebovitz, 92, passed away, Sunday, January 28, 2001. She was born in Czechoslovakia and moved to Arizona 35 years ago from Illinois. She was a member of Phoenix Holocaust Survivors Association and during WWII was imprisoned in Auschwitz and Buchenwald concentration camps. She wrote a personal history of her experiences, "The Enduring Spirit". She was a member of Temple Beth Israel, a volunteer for Kivel Care Center and an expert seamstress. Survivors include her daughter Magda (Ernest) Willinger, son Dr. Sheldon (Robyn) Lebovitz, sister Rose Stein, six grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. Funeral services were Tuesday, January 30, 2001 at Sinai Mortuary Chapel, 4538 N. 16th St., in Phoenix. Contributions in her memory are requested to the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, 100 Raoul Wallenberg Place, S.W., Washington, D.C. 20024.
