AJHS event honors Jewish athletes

"A Sporting Event," a program honoring Jewish athletes, is the theme of the Arizona Jewish Historical Society's Mishpocheh Dinner, 6 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 13, at the Radisson Resort, 7171 N. Scottsdale Road, Scottsdale.

Sportswriter Joe Gilmartin, senior staff writer for the Arizona Diamondbacks media department, will speak about his years covering the sports scene.

An exhibit, "Winners All!" will feature such Arizona sports luminaries as tennis players Jonny Levine and Jim Grabb, gymnast Kerri Strug and swimmer Marilyn Ramenofsky.

Sharon Briskman will be presented with the sixth annual Dorothy Pickelner Enduring Legacy Award for her several years of community service work. She is currently the co-chairwoman of the Shoah Remembrance Center for Reflection, Learning and Discussion at Temple Chai in Phoenix, the chairwoman of Partnership 2000 at the Jewish Federation of Greater Phoenix, the co-chairwoman of the Selection Committee for the Hadassah Leadership Academy and chairwoman of the Outreach Committee for the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC).

The evening will also include a raffle. Prizes include an 18-carat gold and diamond tennis bracelet, an original 1930s wooden stadium seat from Wrigley Field in Chicago and a pass for an Arizona Diamondbacks batting practice.

Raffle tickets are $20 each or three for $50.

Program cost is $150; $100 for guests under 35.

Call 602-241-7870 by Jan. 8.
