Letters to the EditorDecember 8, 2000
Going around, coming aroundEditor:One of the main groups being disenfranchised by Republican shenanigans in the Florida election are elderly and infirm Jews and Holocaust survivors who had trouble marking their ballots. Former Secretary of State James Baker has become the Republican spinmeister on this issue. You remember good-ole-boy Jim Baker who, when being pushed about loan guarantees for Israel, is reputed to have said: "F - - - the Jews, they don't vote for us anyway." Interesting how things come full circle and how Baker and the Republicans have conspired to eliminate these very same Jewish votes. For all those who heeded Sid Rosen's request to register as Republicans to vote for Sen. John McCain in the Republican presidential primary to thank him for his support of Israel, I sure hope you changed your registration back to the Democrats. Gordon Weiner Tempe Mea culpaEditor:Thank you for choosing to publish my letter (Jewish News, Oct. 20). However, I must apologize for, and correct, a potential error. It concerns the tragic killing of the 12-year-old Palestinian child, Mohammed Aldura. Since writing the letter, I have received a number of explanations for how such a dreadful incident could have occurred. Several targeted Israeli soldiers; one identified Palestinians as the culprits. I doubt it will ever be clear who is responsible. Sadly, a young boy was killed. The how and why is of secondary consideration. Helen Kriegsfeld Phoenix No more giveawaysEditor:The Israeli doves are at it again. They are saying, "Let's give something to the Arabs and we'll have peace all the time." That's sheer nonsense because nothing is for all the time. What might be accomplished will be a hiatus in the conflict - but for how long? Consider these facts: The Arab population is multiplying rapidly. Arabs teach that Jews have no rights to Israel and that Jews are treacherous and can be dealt with only in a military fashion. Agreements will be made with the Arabs and then they will have new complaints. "Settle these," the Arabs will say, "for the peace of all time." And shortly thereafter, we'll be back on the merry-go-round. Peace for all time? Highly unlikely. Sooner or later, Israel will have to say "no" to those demands. That time is now.
