LEISAH NAMM
Staff Writer

Fourth-grader Adam Weiner was selected as the grand-prize winner of "Write Stuff,"a Thanksgiving-themed essay writing competition sponsored by Mimi's Cafˇ.
He received a $1,000 educational savings bond at a luncheon Nov. 17 at Mimi's Cafˇ in Ahwatukee.
In his essay, Weiner writes about the freedom of religion in America and about his 102-year-old great-grandmother, Regina Fox, who arrived in America when she was 20 years old. Fox attended the luncheon.
An excerpt from his essay reads:
"America, for my family, is a very special place. We are free to practice any religion we want. Bubbe and my family can live freely as Jews. We can celebrate Jewish holidays, go to our Temple and pray as we want without people hurting us, just like the Pilgrims! On Thanksgiving and everyday, I am thankful to live in America. America is a great country to live in because we respect people's differences and we are free."
Weiner was one of 15 finalists selected from more than 2,500 essays.
Weiner lives with his parents, Felice and Ted Weiner, and his sister Sarah, in Tempe. They are members of Temple Emanuel of Tempe.
