Valley resources

Several organizations provide resources for Phoenix-area breast-cancer patients and survivors.

Marilynne Harstein, a 12-year breast-cancer survivor, is program director and a hotline volunteer for Y-Me Breast Cancer Network of Arizona.

Harstein says callers include women wanting to know where to get a mammogram without health insurance.

"If we get people who are in treatment or have a particular diagnosis, we try to match them up with one of our volunteers who has had a similar diagnosis or a similar treatment," Harstein says.

Y-Me holds monthly meetings in Mesa and Phoenix that include guest speakers and a "rap session."

The Y-Me hotline is 602-231-6666.

Bosom Buddies is a volunteer, nonprofit group of breast cancer survivors with chapters in Scottsdale, the East Valley and the West Valley.

In addition to giving support to one another, volunteers run booths at health fairs and help in other ways, says Jill Janoff, who starts a term as president in January.

Bosom Buddies' 24-hour hotline is 602-231-6648.

A new support group, "Jewish Women Living with Breast Cancer" will meet for six Wednesdays at Beth El Congregation, 1118 W. Glendale Ave., Phoenix. Call 602-944-3359.

The Arizona Institute for Breast Health is a nonprofit foundation formed by a multi-disciplinary team of medical professionals committed to improving the patient experience and treatment outcomes associated with a breast cancer diagnosis.

AIBH offers programs that address all of the issues involved with the disease - from prevention to education, diagnosis, treatment recommendations and recovery. Call 480-860-4200.

The Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation's mission is to eradicate breast cancer as a life-threatening disease by advancing research, education, screening and treatment.
