The Pardes School in Paradise Valley participated in its first United Spirit League co-ed flag football tournament Nov. 9.
The United Spirit League is a sports league, formed in 1998, which gives small private schools the opportunity to participate in team sports. The season began in September with football and will continue throughout the year with soccer and softball.
The teams currently participating in the league are The Pardes School, Phoenix Hebrew Academy, The King David School and El Dorado School.
The Pardes School became involved in the league through the organization of parent Rick Feldmann.
The Pardes Panthers had the obstacle of being the youngest, smallest and least-experienced team on the field, says Toby Indech, Pardes School communications chairwoman and mother of participating third-grader Cailey Indech.
Though the other day schools have students through eighth grade, the Panthers have students through sixth grade.
Indech points out that winning was not the goal of joining the league.
"Our Pardes kids joined this league to have fun, learn teamwork, rules and the basic sports skills that will carry them through life.
"We also felt that joining this league was an invaluable opportunity for our children to meet the other school students, play with them, see their schools and extend the social boundaries that all small schools have."
The Panthers practiced every Monday after school and played games against each of the other teams on Thursdays, on a rotating basis.
The coaching staff was made up of parent volunteers. Doug Addison served as head coach for flag football, with Dan Indech and Dana Toporek as assistant coaches.
