An award for full-time students at Arizona State University has been established to support art with a Jewish theme.

The Joan Frazer Memorial Award in the Arts at Hillel is designed to connect Jewish students in the arts with the Hillel Jewish Student Center, involve them in Jewish learning, link artistry and Jewishness, and showcase students' talents to the Jewish community on campus and throughout the Valley, according to a brochure.

The award is named in memory of Joan Frazer, a community leader who served as a Hillel board member for several years.

"Joan always enjoyed the arts, in whatever form it took," said her husband, David Frazer.

Joan Frazer founded Contacts and Connections, an introduction service for singles, and arranged 220 marriages over 11 years, her husband said. She also was a speech therapist for many years in the Phoenix public school system and co-founder of Communication Skill Builders, a publishing company for speech therapy materials.

Frazer was co-founder and first president of Jewish Business and Professional Women, a board member of Jewish National Fund and a member of Temple Beth Israel in Scottsdale.

She died Oct. 24, 1999.

The Joan Frazer Memorial Award Committee, comprised of representatives from ASU faculty and Hillel, along with members chosen by the Frazer family, will award up to $1,500 per project annually, to one to four students or groups of students.

The awards will support the creation of original, artistic Jewish expressions of Judaism, Jews or Jewish community or culture. Proposals eligible for consideration include a full range of artistic disciplines, including poetry, artwork, drama and music.

Applicants must submit a written description of the proposed project, resumŽ, portfolio and a letter or recommendation. Deadline for submission is March 1. Awards will be announced in the spring for projects to be completed by Feb. 1, 2002.

The award is a designated award of the Jewish Community Foundation of the Jewish Federation of Greater Phoenix.
