Art imitates life"Jewish Illuminated Manuscripts," one of a series of mini-courses at Temple Beth Israel, is set for 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 14, at the temple, 10460 N. 56th St., Scottsdale.The course explores the legacy of illuminations in Hebrew and Yiddish manuscripts produced in the East (Yemen and Persia) and West (Spain, France and Italy) between the 13th-17th centuries. The designs give a picture of Jews' lives and customs, attitudes and resistance to assimilating into the larger cultures in which they lived. The series, held in conjunction with Arizona State University, is funded by a grant from Hedy and Hy Slepicoff. Call 480-951-0323. |
