Kinder, families hold reunion in Scottsdale

The horror that befell millions of families during Adolf Hitler's rise to power in Germany will be remembered this weekend at a gathering of adults and their families whose lives were changed due to the Holocaust.

Kindertransport ("kinder" is German for "children") took 10,000 penniless, mostly Jewish children out of mainland Europe to England by train, without their parents, to spare their lives. England opened its borders to the children, many of whom went to live with foster families.

Following the war, kindertransport survivors stayed in England or immigrated to countries such as Israel and the United States. Some reunited with other family members. Others never saw their families alive again.

Today, the kinder stay in touch through the Kindertransport Association, headquartered in Hicksville, N.Y.

Reunions are held each decade in England, and annually in New York. This year, to accommodate members and families who live on the West Coast, a reunion is being held in the Valley, Friday through Sunday, Oct. 27-29 at the Scottsdale Holiday Inn, 7353 E. Indian School Road. Some 130 people are expected to attend. For information, call Kurt Goldberger, KTA president, at the Holiday Inn, 480-994-9203.
