Program enhances teens' identity

Twenty-eight Valley high school students spent four weeks in Israel as part of AZ-Cool, a community-based program organized and led by Dr. Shmulik Lahar, director of the Israel Center of the Jewish Federation of Greater Phoenix.

The program was geared to enhance the students' Jewish identity through an adventure that included hiking, biking, rappelling, discos, canoeing, camel rides and camping.

Since one of the major deterrents of sending a child to Israel is cost, the program helps decrease the all-inclusive cost from $4,500 to $7,500 to $2,490 for the month-long program, Lahar said.

The program is sponsored by the Harold and Jean Grossman Teen Israel Experience Scholarship, London Gold and Birthright Israel.

The next trip is scheduled for June 14-July 13, 2001.

Call Lahar at 602-274-1800, ext. 130 or e-mail slahar@jewishphoenix.org.
