Program blends parenting skills, Jewish heritage

Developed for families with children ages 2-12, the "Active Parenting Today for Jewish Families" program blends Jewish wisdom and stories with the development of day-to-day parenting skills that foster a sense of cooperation, responsibility and harmony in the home.

The program, developed by the B'nai B'rith Center for Jewish Identity in cooperation with the St. Louis Jewish Community Center and Active Parenting Publishers, is part video and part group discussion. It is divided into six two-hour sessions and is recommended for groups of 10-20 parents.

The Leader's Guide and Jewish Supplemental Guide give step-by-step instructions of when to show the video and stop for discussion and practice. The Parent's Guide and Jewish Supplemental Guide offer examples, charts and family enrichment activities so parents can practice their new skills at home.

Topics include parenting style, building courage and self-esteem, redirecting behavior, natural and logical consequences, effective discipline, active communication skills, conducting problem-solving discussions and family meetings and family enrichment activities.

The program costs $349, plus shipping and handling, and includes the video, parent's guide, leader's guide and supplemental and promotional materials.

To order, visit the Active Parenting Publishers Web site, www.activeparenting.com.
