Piece or peace?

Editor:
It has finally dawned on me that the so-called "peace process" is really a "piece process" wherein Israel keeps on giving away a piece of itself in the hope of achieving a peace with the Palestinians.

Sad not mad

Editor:
If it weren't so sad I would have laughed at the "fighting mad" mood of the members of Congregation Beth Aaron of Teaneck, N.J., in response to the New York Jewish Week's article on Rabbi Baruch Lanner (Jewish News, June 30).

Where were these "deeply concerned" congregants years ago? Many lived in the area at the time and knew about Lanner. Many had children who were members of NCSY. And what about the members of the other two Orthodox congregations that existed at that time?

Worrisome words

Editor:
I don't think that the Hebrew in Stefanie Pearson's commentary, 'Al t'daget, don't worry, it's safe here' (Jewish News, Aug. 11) was a correct translation.

Al t'daget means more "don't treason." I think what she meant to say was al t'dag or al te d'ag, which mean don't worry.

What do you think? Should I worry?

Writer Stefanie Pearson replies: "The reader is right. (My error) is a pitfall of speaking Hebrew more than one reads it - the correct phrase is 'al t'dagee.'"

Rock the boat

Editor:
I am appalled by American Jewish apathy to the plight of the Israeli spy, Jonathan Pollard. Why does Pollard remain in a Federal prison, while others convicted of similar offences receive a slap on the wrist?

Why do so many Jews recoil at the mere mention of Pollard's name? Is it because of the dual loyalty canard, the age-old fear that we'll call attention to ourselves if we're outspoken for one of our own. Or is it because we Jews have it so good and we don't want to rock the boat?
