Thanks for support

Editor:
Thank you so very much for the beautiful article about the very "special" teenagers and young adults (Jewish News, July 28). The Yad B'Yad prom story and photos were both sensitive and touching.

Also, thanks for your continued support in informing your readers about the Council for Jews with Special Needs and Southwest Autism Research Center.

Gentle boy, gentle man

Editor:
I grew up with Howard Mechanic's sister, Marilyn (Jewish News, July 14.) We have been close friends since we were 7 years old. That makes Howard 3 years old when I first met him and his twin, Harvey.

Howard was raised with the values described in your article about him. He was a gentle boy who grew into a gentleman. I do not believe he threw anything at anyone during the riot at Washington University.

There were many riots at many universities protesting what happened at Kent State that year. It wasn't fair that Howard was sent to prison; it isn't fair that he is in prison now.

I hope all those who feel as I do will access his Web site and sign the petition requesting a pardon from President Clinton.
