JCC needs a theater

Editor:
Janet Arnold's commentary (Jewish News, June 9) urging the inclusion of a theater in plans for the new Jewish Community Center (part of the community campus facility planned for north Scottsdale) is both valid and important to the future of the center.

Every state-of-the-art JCC, and most older JCCs, are equipped with theater facilities which allow the centers to bring Jewish cultural activities to the community. A theater facility, rather than a large room with a stage at one end, would enhance that goal.

We have been informed that adequate funding is not available to pursue this project. Perhaps there are individuals in the Jewish community willing to provide the funds to support such an important facility at the JCC so that events such as the Passages lecture series or the Israel Film Festival and other large meetings and small conventions could use it as their venue.

Arnold also mentioned the issue of the distance of the new facility from central Phoenix, where the former JCC and current federation offices are located. Attending luncheon meetings at the north Scottsdale location may prove impracticable for those of us who work in midtown Phoenix.

Some consideration should be given by the federation board to renting space in midtown Phoenix to allow greater participation in federation activities.

Jesus Day belies sensitivity

Editor:
On June 10, Gov. George W. Bush proclaimed Jesus Day in Texas.

There are many reasons I will not vote for him for president, but I never thought one of them would be his religious insensitivity.

He has proven to me once again that he is not bright, but also his religious views are not expansive enough to include anyone whose belief system differs from his.

It appears that he may think it is all right to change the name of our country to the United States of Christian America.
