Obituaries

Melvin Solon

Melvin Kenneth Solon of Scottsdale died May 29, 2000. He was 85.

He was born in Chicago. He was a retired owner of a carpet-cleaning business.

Survivors include his wife, Kathleen; daughter, Eleanor Farkas of Chicago; son, Paul of Scottsdale; sister, Delphyne Rosen of Scottsdale; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Services were held at Temple Solel. Arrangements were by Newcomer Family Mortuary.

Contributions are suggested to the American Heart Association, 2929 S. 48th Street, Tempe 85282; and to the Leukemia Society of America Inc., Arizona Chapter, 2990 E. Northern Avenue, Phoenix 85028.



Samuel Rothenberg

Samuel Rothenberg of Sun City West died June 2, 2000. He was 78.

He was born in Syracuse, N.Y. He was a professor at Syracuse University of New York for 40 years and a member of Beth Emeth Congregation of the Northwest Valley. He served in the U.S. Navy Pacific Theater of War in World War II.

Survivors include his wife, Shirley; stepsons, David Goot of Phoenix and Michael Goot of South Carolina; brothers, Lewis and Joseph; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Services were held in Syracuse, N.Y. Arrangements were by Sinai Mortuary.

Yetta Cantor

Yetta Cantor of Tempe died June 4, 2000. She was 76.

She was born in Bayonne, N.J. She was a retired bookkeeper and office manager. She was a member of Temple Emanuel, Temple Emanuel Sisterhood and Jewish Women International.

Survivors include her husband, Meyer; daughter, Anne Chandler of Tempe; and sister, Shirley Frank of Mesa.

Graveside services were held at Green Acres Cemetery, with Rabbi Andrew Straus officiating. Arrangements were by Sinai Mortuary.

Philip Lerner

Philip D. Lerner of Swampscott, Mass., died June 2, 2000. He was 53.

He was born in Lynn, Mass. He was campaign and marketing director for the Jewish Federation of Greater Phoenix from 1996-98. He was most recently president and founder of Production Specialties Inc., a marketing company that aided nonprofit organizations.

He was the director of external affairs and public policy adviser for the governor's office in Massachusetts, and a vice president for development at Emerson College. He was also a consultant on youth unemployment during the Carter administration.

He was a member of Temple Beth El in Swampscott.

Survivors include his former wife, Susan; his mother, Estelle Gallis; a son, Matthew; and daughter, Arielle, all of Swampscott; and a brother, Alan, of Dallas.

Services were held at Temple Beth El and interment was at Pride of Lynn Cemetery in Lynn. Arrangements were by Stanetsky-Hymanson Memorial Chapels in Salem, Mass.



John Hamilton

John R. Hamilton of Scottsdale died May 19, 2000. He was 76.

He was born in Chicago and moved to Arizona 30 years ago from Illinois. He was a union electrician, retired compliance officer, police officer and magistrate. He served in the United States Navy Pacific Theater during World War II.

Survivors include his companion, Arline Fromm of Scottsdale; his son, Craig of Merrimac, Wis.; sisters, Agnus Barrett of Suttons Bay, Mich., and Frances Haselberger of Chicago; and two grandchildren.

Services will be held at Temple Solel, with Rabbi Maynard Bell officiating. Arrangements were by Sinai Mortuary.
