Mechanic plea evokes support

Editor:
Thank you for publishing my article about Howard Mechanic (Jewish News, May 12). The response has been heartwarming, both morally and financially.

The request for a presidential pardon for Howard is being requested based on the following points:

the harshness of the sentence imposed during a turbulent time in U.S. history and when petitioner was a 22-year-old college student;
the disparity of his sentence with that of defendant Lawrence Kogan, who served approximately 90 days and was pardoned by President Reagan;
Howard's 28-years as a businessman and contributing member of the community.

Mayor's speech misses the mark

Marty Latz is right on with his comments about the Phoenix appearance of Las Vegas Mayor Oscar Goodman (Jewish News, June 2). Goodman was very entertaining - but he didn't really say anything.

I enjoy Marty's column very much.
