Mechanic plea evokes support

Editor:
Thank you for publishing my article about Howard Mechanic (Jewish News, May 12). The response has been heartwarming, both morally and financially.

The request for a presidential pardon for Howard is being requested based on the following points:
  • the harshness of the sentence imposed during a turbulent time in U.S. history and when petitioner was a 22-year-old college student;

  • the disparity of his sentence with that of defendant Lawrence Kogan, who served approximately 90 days and was pardoned by President Reagan;

  • Howard's 28-years as a businessman and contributing member of the community.
Persons interested in contributing to or volunteering for the Howard Mechanic Defense Committee can call Sherry Bohlen at 480-497-6541.

Mayor's speech misses the mark

Editor:
Marty Latz is right on with his comments about the Phoenix appearance of Las Vegas Mayor Oscar Goodman (Jewish News, June 2). Goodman was very entertaining - but he didn't really say anything.

I enjoy Marty's column very much.
