Selection of Shavuot events

Shavuot, historically the third pilgrimage festival to Jerusalem and traditionally the commemoration of the giving of the Torah at Mount Sinai, begins at sundown June 8 and ends sundown June 10. The holiday represents the culmination of the seven-week omer-counting period begun on the second night of Passover.

The following are some of the Shavuot-activities taking place in the Valley:
  • Hear the Ten Commandments and then make your own ice cream dessert: 10:30 a.m. Friday, June 9, New Courtyard by Marriott, Ray Road and I-10. Chabad of the East Valley, 480-753-5366.

  • Community Shavuot Learn-in: 7 p.m. - midnight Thursday, June 8, Beth El Congregation, 1118 W. Glendale Ave., Phoenix. Sponsored by Beth El and the Bureau of Jewish Education. Come anytime; refreshments served; no charge. Call 602-234-1645.

  • On the World Wide Web, visit CLAL's National Unity Shavuot Web site: www.Shavuot.org. Information about Shavuot's origins and customs, texts for private or group study, and an online study area for virtual learning sessions with participants around the world. Contact Andrew Silow-Carroll, 212-779-3300, ext. 121.

  • Consult your local synagogue or Jewish institution for additional activities.
