Come the start of summer vacation, you may be glad to see more of your children. But you can only entertain them for so long. And within a short time, they may need other outlets besides an air-conditioned home where they can work off their energy and have some fun.

Several Jewish day camps around the Valley offer ways to keep children active during the hot summer days. Here are some of them:

Trips to the Arizona Science Center, an ice-skating rink, IMAX Theater and a bowling alley are features of Camp Gan Israel, for children 4-12. The camp is held at the Chabad-Lubavitch Center at 2110 E. Lincoln Drive, Phoenix. Other activities include lessons in Jewish culture, discussion groups, swimming, miniature golf, arts and crafts, Hebrew songs, challah baking and Shabbatonim. Cost is $125 per week, with discounts available for siblings. Call 602-944-2753.
Lights, camera, action! The Arizona Jewish Theatre Company holds a Curtain Call Theatre Camp for children ages 7-13, at Temple Beth Israel, 10460 N. 56th Street, Scottsdale.

The full-day camp explores the excitement of the stage while building confidence and self-esteem. Workshops in voice, dance and acting are combined with techniques such as makeup, audition skills, costuming and set building.

A public performance will be held the last week of both four-week sessions. Cost is $500 per session. Call 602-264-0402.
From the turn of the century through the 1990s, the Tri-City Jewish Community Center will go "Through the Decades" during Summer Camp 2000. Each one- and two-week program focuses activities around a different decade.

Program activities for 3-year-olds through eighth-graders may include family picnics, overnighters, Olympic-style games, swimming, arts and crafts, dress-up days, Israel Day, music, drama, sports, movies and water games.

Fees are $100 per week for JCC members and $130 per week for non-members.
An additional JCC program is Summer Stock 2000. This six-week after-camp program is open to children entering grades 1-8 and the performance will be "The Wizard of Oz."

Tuition is $150.
