Local Jews pay tribute to fallen soldiers, celebrate independence

Next week marks two important holidays for the state of Israel - Yom Hazikaron (Israel Memorial Day) May 9, and Yom Ha'atzmaut (Israel Independence Day) May 10.

The following are local upcoming events relating to these dates.

The Israel Center of the Jewish Federation of Greater Phoenix and the Bureau of Jewish Education will co-sponsor a Yom Hazikaron communitywide event 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 9, at Temple Chai, 4645 E. Marilyn Road, Phoenix.

A memorial service will be held for Israelis who sacrificed their lives to make Israel a Jewish homeland and a safer, more secure country.

The Jewish Federation of Greater Phoenix will host a Yom Ha'atzmaut Celebration and Family Picnic 5-7 p.m. Wednesday, May 10, at Cactus Park on Cactus and Scottsdale roads.

The event will offer family fun with relay races, arts and crafts activities, sports tournaments, travel-around-Israel activities, live music and Israeli food.

Temple Beth Israel will entertain with a Yom Ha'atzmaut concert 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 10, at 10460 N. 56th St., Scottsdale in the Goldsmith sanctuary.

Cost is $12 in advance or $18 at the door.
