Bone marrow donors sought for girl

City of Hope is sponsoring a free bone-marrow drive for 9-year-old Michaela "Kayla" Wexler of Prescott. She has aplastic anemia, a rare disorder that results from the failure of bone marrow to produce blood cells.

The procedure normally costs $65 but is free at the locations below, because of support from volunteers, private donors and community-matching funds.
  • 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., Sunday, May 7, Chaparral Christian Church, 6441 E. Shea Blvd., Scottsdale.

  • 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday, May 27, Community Church of Hope, 4400 N. Central, Phoenix.
Kayla's tissue types do not match that of her family. The National Bone Marrow Donor Registry has not yet been able to produce a match. Since some tissue types are unique to racial or ethnic groups, Kayla's best chance may come from an Ashkenazic Jew of eastern European origin.

Those who wish to be tested to see if they are a match for Kayla or anyone else will be asked to complete a brief health questionnaire, sign a consent form to have tissue type listed on the registry and provide a small blood sample.

Once listed on the registry, the tissue type of potential donors will be compared to patients requiring transplants.

For more information, call City of Hope, 602-340-8871.
