Students win science prizes

Students from Phoenix Hebrew Academy and Phoenix Preparatory High School won several awards at the Central Arizona Regional Science and Engineering Fair, held at Arizona State University from April 6-9.

PHA eighth-grader Debbie Fleming won first place in the "Medicine and Health" and "Society for Technical Communications" categories for her exhibit "Chemicals vs. Heart rate."

PHA eighth-grader Jennifer Jackson won first place in the "Mathematics and Computers" and "ASU College of Engineering and Applied Sciences" categories for her exhibit, "A Role of the Dice."

PHA fifth-grader William Weisenfeld won first place in the "Physical Science" category for his exhibit "Marvels of Electroplating."

P.P.H.S. sophomore Jeanette Kaikov placed second in the "Medicine and Health Senior Division" for her study of the filtration on residues from smoking various tobacco products.

Sara Loeb, an eighth-grader at Explorer Middle School in Phoenix, was awarded two prizes at the fair.

Loeb's project, "Testing the Insulation Value of Various Containers," won second place for the Special Award presented by the ASU College of Engineering and Applied Science and third place in the Junior Division of the Energy and Materials category.

How Does Music Affect the Pulse and Blood Pressure?"; Yitzy Segal, "Changing the Boiling and Freezing Points of Water"; Natalia Moldavskiy, "Effects of Anti-Bacterial Soaps on Bacteria"; Hila Leibovitch, "Attracting Earthworms to Soil"; Yisroel Silverman, "Rolling Friction"; Matthew Berger, "Will a Metal Corrode Quicker Under Acid or a Base"; Daniel Eisenberg, "The Flies That Died For Us - How Drosophila Taught Us Genetics"; Jeremy Levy, "Ascorbic Acid Content in Variety of Orange Juices"; Sarah Bukshpan, "Saving the Water"; Jordan Kaplow, "Do You Need Better Insulation? No Problem"; and Leah Shimonova, "Bread Mold: Here It Comes, Like It or Not!"
