Mitzvah Day volunteers add color to the grounds of Kivel Campus of Care in Phoenix. Dan Fabricant plants flowers with from left, Eva Hilton, Shari Hilton and his daughter Rachel.
Volunteers organized shoes, painted murals, donated blood, prepared peanut butter and marshmallow sandwiches and cleaned hiking trails at various Valley locations as part of Mitzvah Day on Sunday, April 16.

Over 300 people joined in this fourth annual event - slightly more than last year, says Tami Schultz of the Jewish Community Relations Council of the Jewish Federation of Greater Phoenix.

Other volunteers donated items such as clothing, shoes and hygiene items, which were sorted and sent to homeless shelters.

Laura Borgeson of Shoebox Ministries says that the volunteers "helped out tremendously" by decorating and filling up shoeboxes. The agency collects shoeboxes, packs them with toiletries and donates them to shelters. The men, women and children who receive these boxes can use the contents and save the boxes for storage.

Among agencies served were AIDS Project of Arizona, American Red Cross, Andre House, Back to School Drive, Council for Jews with Special Needs, Crisis Nursery, Jewish Family & Children's Services, Kivel Campus of Care, South Mountain Park, St. Vincent de Paul, United Blood Service, United Food Bank, Valley of the Sun Jewish Community Center Preschool and YWCA of Maricopa County.

Sponsors of the day were the Jewish Community Relations Council of the federation, Jewish News of Greater Phoenix and Runbeck Graphics, Inc.
