Israel's friends need to 'watch' news coverage

Editor:
Recent coverage on local television regarding the temporary hiatus in the negotiations between Israel and Syria has gone beyond a simple reporting of the facts. One newscaster in particular blamed the lapse on Israel's intransigence. This is editorializing and not reporting.

It is outrageous for ostensibly responsible news organizations to comment on what they perceive to be the supposed cause of a particular series of events. They do a disservice by disseminating opinion as news.

The talks between Israel and Syria are a negotiation, with each party attempting to convince the other of the validity of their respective positions. The fact that they do not agree does not entitle a news organization to evaluate and comment on what the cause might be or where the blame might lie.

We, as discerning viewers, should challenge this type of coverage whenever it occurs.

Calling kindergarten alumni for reunion

Editor:
We are holding a 20-year reunion of Beth El kindergarten alumni on Sunday, Feb. 20, at Beth El Congregation, 1118 W. Glendale Ave. in Phoenix. We are in search of as many of our former students as possible to invite them to this wonderful celebration. Sue Cohen, our much beloved kindergarten teacher, will be honored at the event.

If you've not received an invitation in the mail, please contact the Beth El preschool office, 602-944-2464, to give us your current address so that we may forward one to you.

Meet candidates online

Editor:
There has been recent discussion in the Valley media regarding the cost of sending Scottsdale City Council candidate literature to the voters of Scottsdale. Readers may be interested in an online, non-partisan resource for information about candidates, located at www.expage.com/page/cos2000. It provides an introduction to each candidate and a link to individual Web sites. It may also serve as a resource for educators in the Valley who wish to direct their students to local civic issues via the Internet.

Brooklyn grads sought

Editor:
A 50th anniversary of the elementary school graduation class of June 1950, P.S. 119 (The Amersfort) of the Flatbush section of Brooklyn, N.Y., will be held in May 2000.

Exact date and location of the reunion will be determined when we ascertain the number of people expected to attend. However, we tentatively plan a Sunday afternoon event in the New York metropolitan area. The reunion promises to be a grand time to renew acquaintances and catch up on family news.

All alumni of the class are invited to contact Alan L. Berger (telephone, 631-261-2600 or e-mail, AlanBergES@aol.com) or Paula Held Sharf (telephone 718-423-6200, e-mail phsharf@webtv.net) so that they may be included on the invitation list.

Also, we would appreciate your forwarding mailing addresses for other fellow graduates you may have.

We know that many of our fellow graduates have retired and may have moved to your community and most appreciate your assistance in helping us to locate them.
