'A Night to Honor Israel' returns with Dennis Prager

Christians United for Israel will host its second Phoenix "A Night to Honor Israel" 6 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 18, at Phoenix Symphony Hall, 75 N. Second St.

The first event, held in June 2007, was met with a mixed reaction from individuals in the Valley's Jewish community ("Evangelical supporters," Jewish News, June 8, 2007) and raised $50,000 for the Jewish Federation of Greater Phoenix's TIPS (Tucson, Israel, Phoenix, Seattle) project, which supports humanitarian efforts in southern Israel. This year, funds will also go toward the federation's TIPS program, according to the federation.

The federation's Web site describes the event as "a non-conversionary tribute to the nation of Israel and the Jewish people of the world." The event will feature syndicated radio talk show host and author Dennis Prager, as well as Gil Artzyeli, deputy consul general of Israel in Los Angeles. Pastor John Hagee, CUFI founder and national chairman, will speak via video feed.

Tickets are $18. Call 602-262-7272 or visit ticketmaster.com.

Event looks at Christian Zionism

"Changing the Future by Confronting the Past, Why Christians Support Israel," a program addressing issues about Christian Zionism and Israel, will be held 7:15-9:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 12, at the Ina Levine Jewish Community Campus, 12701 N. Scotts-dale Road, Scottsdale.

The event is sponsored by the JCC Alliance4Israel, the New Israel Center of the Jewish Federation of Greater Phoenix, Rabbi Robert Kravitz, the Evangelical Sisterhood of Mary at Canaan in the Desert and Pastor Eddy Paul Morris of the Deer Valley Worship Center, who is the state director for Christians United For Israel, which is hosting "A Night to Honor Israel" on Oct. 18 (see above item).

The evening will include talks by Kravitz; Morris; Sharron Topper-Amitai, community shlicha from Israel; and Sister Mary Anne of the Evangelical Sisterhood of Mary. Bill Straus, executive director of the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) will moderate the evening and lead a question-and-answer session involving the speakers and the audience. The program will include the showing of "Repentance."

Admission is free. Topics to be discussed include why a segment of the Christian community supports and fights for Israel, Christian guilt toward the Jewish people and whether healing and reconciliation is possible. For further information, call Steve Rosenbaum, 480-216-4280, or Carol Talmon, 602-265-2251.

Five locals nominated as heroes

Nominations are closed for Jewish Community Heroes, an interactive initiative of United Jewish Communities, but voting continues through Oct. 8.

Nominees from the Greater Phoenix area are Scott Farrell, president of Lab Express, which provides Arizonans with low-cost health screenings; Carlos Galindo-Elvira, who has worked to promote dialogue and collaboration between Arizona's Latino and Jewish communities; Stephanie Houser, a principal of the production company Launch Flix, who is producing a feature film based on the book of Holocaust survivor Dr. Henry Ortelt; Gerda Weissmann Klein, a Holocaust survivor, author and historian; and artist Robert Sutz, who makes life masks of Holocaust survivors and creates related artwork to help tell their stories.

To vote, visit jewishcommunityheroes.org.

Dershowitz vs. Prager

The Valley of the Sun Jewish Community Center's "Live from New York's 92nd Street Y" is back this fall, debuting with "The Left, the Right and Judaism in America," featuring attorney Alan Dershowitz and radio talk show host Dennis Prager at 5 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 8. The two will debate on issues surrounding Judaism and the Middle East conflict, live via satellite from the 92nd Street Y in New York City. The JCC is located at 12701 N. Scottsdale Road, Scottsdale. Cost is $8 JCC members, $12 nonmembers. Call 480-783-7121.
