ShabbatLuck announces 'Cool Shul Campaign'
ShabbatLuck, a program for Jewish young adults ages 21-39, announces its Cool Shul Campaign, which involves connecting its participants with synagogues in the Phoenix area for the High Holidays.
"We recognize that many of our members are not currently affiliated with synagogues and can use the help to connect to the Phoenix Jewish community," Cory Shapiro, a ShabbatLuck founder, wrote to Jewish News. About a month ago, ShabbatLuck reached out to rabbis at synagogues and congregations across Phoenix with a great response from a number of them, providing ShabbatLuck with complimentary High Holiday tickets with a minimal donation.
ShabbatLuck has received 270 complimentary High Holiday tickets from nine synagogues: Congregation Beth Israel, Congregation Eitz Chaim, Har Zion Congregation, Kehillah of Arizona, Temple Chai, Temple Emanuel, Temple Gan Elohim, Temple Kol Ami and Temple Solel.
ShabbatLuck, which plans potluck Shabbat dinners for young adults throughout the year, piloted the program last year with Kehillah of Arizona; two of its members now serve on the Kehillah board.

ShabbatLuck is teaming with L'Chaim, another Jewish young adult group, for a break-the-fast 7 p.m. Monday, Sept. 28, at Congregation Beth Israel, 10460 N. 56th St., Scottsdale.
The third annual event, originally hosted by L'Chaim, includes a free catered kosher dinner sponsored by the Dana Cheryl Beitscher Charitable Foundation. To get on the Evite list, visit shabbatluck.com.
High Holiday food drive
Arizona Tomchei Shabbat is conducting a food drive to provide food to needy families for Shabbat and the High Holidays.
Nonperishable kosher food can be dropped off in collection boxes in many local kosher stores and Jewish institutions.
The program was founded in March 2006 by Heidi Ungar and Moshe Novakoff (See "Shabbat supporters," Jewish News, June 2, 2006).

Sun Lakes holds Sept. 11 service
In memory of the victims of 9/11, Rabbi Irwin Wiener of the Sun Lakes Jewish Congregation will lead a remembrance service at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 11, at the Sun Lakes Chapel, 1420 N. Sun Lakes Blvd., Chandler.
The service will include special prayers and tributes from members of the clergy of Sun Lakes who have been invited to participate.
Shalit campaign gets big response
The response from the Gilad Shalit Campaign organized by the New Israel Center of the Jewish Federation of Greater Phoenix has been "amazing," according to Sharron Topper-Amitai, the center's community shlicha. More than 1,000 postcards to the American Red Cross National Headquarters in D.C. have been filled out, and many synagogues and day schools have addressed the plight of the captured Israeli soldier.
