Kollel hosts class on Thanksgiving


"Thanking the Jewish Way," a free Thanksgiving Torah-learning program, will be held Thursday, Nov. 27, at the Phoenix Community Kollel, 6516 N. Seventh St., Room 104. The first class, "Thanksgiving in our Liturgy," starts at 9:30 a.m. and will be led by Rabbi Yossie Semel. The 10:15 a.m. class, "The Business of Thanks," will be led by Rabbi Raphael Landesman.

Registration is at 9 a.m.

Prepare for Hanukkah at BFJCC


The Barness Family Jewish Community Center will host its first holiday boutique 11:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 3.

Vendors will sell home goods, spa items, clothing, jewelry, art, toys, books and other specialty items. Space for additional vendors is available. Contact Ronna, 480-897-0588 or Ronna@evjcc.org.

The JCC will also host a Hanukkah shop, where visitors can purchase a variety of Hanukkah items, from menorahs and dreidels to puzzles and candies. The Hanukkah Shop opens Dec. 1 in the JCC lobby and will be available through the end of the month. Hours are 7 a.m.-6 p.m.

The JCC is located at 908 N. Alma School Road, Chandler.


Tribe shops for a good cause


For the third year, Tribe is participating in the Adopt-A-Family program run by Labor's Community Service Agency.

Participants will meet for lunch at noon Sunday, Dec. 7, at Salty Senorita, 14950 N. Northsight Blvd., in North Scottsdale, and then shop at Wal-Mart, at about 1 p.m., for the group's adopted families. All contributions welcome.

LCSA serves the general welfare of the community and advocates for health and human services that meet the needs of all members of the community, especially the most vulnerable and dependent. Visit lcsa.us.

Program attracts medley of leaders


More than 40 members of boards of Valley Jewish community organizations attended the Jewish Federation of Greater Phoenix's leadership development series in September. Organizations represented included Phoenix BBYO, Camp Swift Youth Foundation, Council For Jews With Special Needs, Hadassah Valley of the Sun, Jewish Family & Children's Service, the federation, Jewish Free Loan, The King David School, National Council of Jewish Women, Pardes Jewish Day School, Ruach Hadassah and several synagogues.

Steve Weitzenkorn, an organizational psychologist and a board member of several local Jewish organizations, served as program facilitator. The program focused on various aspects of effective Jewish leadership, provided tools for board members and promoted discussion about common issues.


JFCS center to move


The Jewish Family & Children's Service Center for Life Enrichment is moving to a new location.

As of Nov. 27, the center's new home will be at 4545 E. Shea Blvd., Phoenix.
