“I Never Saw Another Butterfly”— part of Scottsdale Community College's observance of Genocide Awareness Week — will be presented today, April 11, and April 12 by the SCC Theater Arts department. The free shows will be held at the college’s outdoor amphitheater. SCC Theater Arts is holding a shoe drive in conjunction with the show; donations of new shoes will be given to three local charities.

“I Never Saw Another Butterfly” is a one-act play by Celeste Raspanti based on the book of the same name, a collection of art and poetry created by the children of the Terezin concentration camp. In the play, a survivor of the camp named Raja narrates the story of her time at Terezin.

SCC Theater Arts Director Randy Messersmith is directing the play, and says, “I’ve tried to really get [the students] immersed in terms of what was happening as well as just working on the play,” a process that includes watching Holocaust documentaries and learning more about Terezin.

But, he notes, it’s important for his students to understand that genocide is not just a historical event.

“Genocide Awareness Week points out how current and unfortunately, prevalent, all of this still is. This is not gone away in many, many countries, and it’s really important that our students make those connections and draw those parallels, that this isn’t a historical event, this is something that’s absolutely current in our world today.”
