Two years ago, 12 days before his ninth birthday, my son Yehuda was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes.

In the weeks before his diagnosis, he had been drinking a lot of water, which we thought was great because we live in a desert. He had lost some weight, but we assumed that was because of a growth spurt and because he had just joined a basketball team.
