Ed Katz laughs when he remembers his then 13-year-old son, Jared, becoming a bar mitzvah in 1993. Because Jared, now 38, has a number of conditions that have left him frail and needing 24/7 care, Katz turned to his rabbi at Temple Emanuel and what was then called the Council for Jews With Special Needs to help his son get through the religious ceremony.

“It was quite a scene, I might add,” Katz said with a chuckle.
